Ganesh, or Ganesha, is the Hindu elephant-headed God known as being the remover of obstacles. A very popular deity to use in meditation practice, this is an antique bronze piece that is becoming increasingly hard to find nowadays.
To incorporate a statue of Ganesha into your meditation practice, bring him into your space when you are needing help with overcoming an obstacle, health issue or if you are going through a difficult experience. Ganesha is also believed to bring success to new business ventures and new beginnings.
One of the best known and most worshipped dieties in the Hindu faith (and one of the five principal deities of Hinduism), Ganesha is also worshipped by Buddhists and is considered the patron of arts and sciences. History dates the emergence of Ganesha back to the 1st century BC and images of this diety were common throughout India by the 6th Century.
According to Kundalini yoga, Ganesha resides in the first chakra – the base – which is connected to feelings of stability, safety and survival.
A simple root chakra meditation is to sit with your shoulders back and spine straight, relaxing all your muscles while breathing deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth. Turn your attention to the root chakra which is right below your tailbone and imagine a red glow at the base of your spine. Sit in this space for 3-5 minutes and imagine the red glow slowly expanding.
